Springfield Cut Sheets
I recently had some free time so I thought I would do a series of perspective renderings for a recent residential master plan in Springfield. While the plan was already completed in plan view I do think perspectives help everyone understand more clearly the proposed massing and spaces. click images for humongous version
I’m enjoying using this style for conceptual style presentations, I think the rendering allows the client a better feel for the possibilities of their design over a plan view in many cases. click photo for humongous version Previous entries on this design here & here
Gorgeous Containers
Although their website is sorely lacking in aesthetics, the containers certainly are not. I was introduced to Duracraft garden planters through a good friend (and excellent designer) Jason Dengler of Wildwood Landscapes. Let’s be honest; the vast majority of ‘fake’ planters and outdoor containers look just that: Fake. Fiberglass, blown plastic, various concrete castings, they [...]
A Great Falls Client
Some early conceptual work. These are very much ‘getting ready to get ready’ drawings used to flesh out and decide on desired elements before moving forward with the formal design (which would include plan views and construction documents). click for humongous version
The Awesome Clients, cont.

One challenge I’ve faced in graphically representing all aspects of a woodland design is the groundplain, which is often heavily layered with colonizing bulbs, perennials, groundcovers, and ephemerals. In the past I’ve done trace overlays, weird or awkward (to me) ‘maps’ with keys explaining what goes where, CAD drawings with all other layers turned off [...]
The Catonsville House, con’t.
(History of this space & design) Beginnings of the front bed which is enclosed by the semicircular driveway. There are a myriad of further layers of planting and textures to consider, most notably perennial choices, annual displays and compositions, containers, and sculptural elements (art, water features, etc.). click the image for humongous version closeup I [...]
The Woodland Client
A tiny copse of mature lovely deciduous hardwood trees. No understory plantings to break up the strong vertical lines of the mature trunks. Two bare earth beds with a turf path running between them. What to do? I say plant in massive amounts of colonizing woodland ephemerals and perennials, along with flowering vines. Crocus-Spring – [...]
The Catonsville House
This lovely, priceless home is an authentic Queen Anne style house in Catonsville Md, where it sits among other German-influenced Victorian houses on generous lots. I basically threw myself at the owner in a bid to design the space and he was kind enough to agree. The house has an interesting history; just one family [...]
The Awesome Clients
Here is a down & dirty massing study for a proposed front entrance for one of my favorite clients: It’s a big change from the current situation, which is essentially a rudderless space for the past 40 years or so: It’s going to be spectacular.
